HBO Sets November 17 Premiere for Dawn Porter's Wrongful Conviction Documentary

HBO will premiere the documentary When a Witness Recants on November 17, and it will stream on HBO Max, Deadline reported in an exclusive announcement.
The film is about an egregious wrongful conviction case, meaning one in which a person was found guilty of a crime and later the conviction came into question. Dawn Porter directed it. Ta-Nehisi Coates is an executive producer.
The film also looks beyond the courtroom. Warner Bros. Discovery's press materials say it examines the collateral damage, or the wider harm, that the handling of the case caused to the close-knit community at its centre. The film's listing appears in the company's announcement of what is new on HBO Max this November, published on 22 October.
The project has already travelled a long way before reaching a television schedule. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, the independent film event where distributors and sales agents often look for new titles. It later won the Audience Award at the Mill Valley Film Festival, a prize voted on by festival audiences.
The film has its roots in print. It is adapted from an article in The New Yorker by Jennifer Gonnerman. Jennifer Oko and Miriam Weintraub are credited as producers. Porter is credited as both director and producer, according to the Bentonville Film Festival's 2026 lineup, which listed the film in May.
For viewers, the date gives a clear target. The premiere lands in the middle of November, and HBO Max subscribers will be able to watch it from the same service that carries the rest of the network's slate. Anyone wanting to follow the film before then can check the HBO Max listings closer to the date.
A film often takes years from first draft to screen, and this one is no exception. Festival wins and press coverage help a documentary find an audience, but the schedule decision is what puts it in front of people at home.
