State Department's Fiscal 2027 Budget Request Totals $33.6 Billion and Eliminates Family Planning Funding

The U.S. State Department's budget request for fiscal year 2027 comes to $33.6 billion, and the detailed justification that accompanies it states that the budget eliminates family planning and reproductive health activities.
The request is set out in the department's FY 2027 Congressional Budget Justification. A budget justification is the document an agency submits to Congress to explain what it is asking for and why. The request is a proposal, and Congress is the body that considers it before any money is set aside.
Family planning refers to programs that help people decide whether and when to have children. Reproductive health covers a wider range of health care related to the reproductive system. The justification document says the proposed budget would end both kinds of activity.
The department's earlier budget justification for fiscal year 2026 listed $573.0 million in program funds. That figure appears in a separate document, the FY 2026 State Department Congressional Budget Justification.
