Everton and Newcastle United meet tonight in the Carabao Cup fourth round, and the winners move into the quarter-finals. The Carabao Cup is the League Cup, a knockout competition where one defeat ends your run. Kick-off at Hill Dickinson Stadium is 7.45pm GMT.

The match is sold out, according to Everton's club website. It will be shown live on Sky Sports+. Farai Hallam is the referee, with James Mainwaring and Constantine Hatzidakis as assistant referees, the two officials who patrol the touchlines and flag for offside and throw-ins.

Both sides have had a winning start to this season's cup. Everton beat Preston 4-0 in August. Newcastle beat West Brom 3-2 in the same round of games, and Newcastle won this competition in 2025, so they arrive as holders of the trophy from last season's final. Fleetwood Town are waiting in the quarter-finals for whichever side goes through.

This is not a fixture without history. Newcastle beat Everton 4-1 in the Premier League last November. Malick Thiaw scored twice in that game, and his first goal came after just 52 seconds, the fastest goal of the Premier League season, Reuters reported. Those are the kinds of early blows a team has to shake off quickly.

Go back further and the picture changes. In March 2022, Everton played the last part of a Premier League match with ten men and still beat Newcastle 1-0. Alex Iwobi scored the winner in the final minutes. Everton fans still talk about that one.

For a neutral, the appeal is simple. Cup nights bring a different kind of tension. A single goal can settle everything, and there is no table to hide behind. Hill Dickinson will be full, and the crowd will know it has a say in how the night goes.

Elsewhere in the round, Liverpool beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties and will now face Bournemouth. Tonight's result will decide which of these two clubs gets the next draw against Fleetwood Town.

Kick-off is 7.45pm GMT. Whoever wins will be counting down to the quarter-finals.
