Rural Northeast California Republicans Say New Map Leaves Them Without a Voice

Some rural Republicans in far northeastern California say the state's new congressional map has left them without a voice in Washington, according to NPR, which reported on the issue on October 29, 2026.
The region's congressional district used to be reliably Republican, NPR reported. Proposition 50, the redistricting measure, carved up that district. NPR reported that many voters in the area may soon have a Democrat representing them in Congress as a result.
Proposition 50 is a statewide ballot measure, meaning a question California voters decide directly at the polls. Voters approved it on November 4, 2025. It authorized the state to use a new congressional map drawn in Assembly Bill 604 for the 2026 elections.
Under Proposition 50, California will temporarily use the legislatively drawn district maps starting in 2026 and continuing through 2030, according to the California Secretary of State's quick reference guide. Redistricting is the process of redrawing the boundaries of the districts that elect members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
