Spanish singer Rosalía used a stage in New York on Thursday night to send condolences to the people affected by a train crash in Spain. Billboard reported that she spoke in Spanish from the podium at The Museum of Modern Art, where she was being honoured as Music Innovator at the WSJ. Magazine Innovator Awards.

The crash happened on Wednesday morning, 28 October, in Castilla-La Mancha, south of Madrid. Two high-speed trains collided. High-speed rail is the fast passenger network that links Spain's major cities. Billboard reports that 69 people were killed. The Wall Street Journal reported around 70 people injured in the collision.

Rosalía's remarks were brief and directed at everyone touched by the accident. She did not name individual victims. She also did not comment on the cause, which is still being examined.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez promised a full and thorough investigation into what happened. Billboard carried his commitment. Emergency crews searched through the night after the collision, according to Reuters.

The disaster is one of Spain's deadliest rail accidents. According to The Wall Street Journal, it was also the second crash on the same line in 2026.

Across the country, city halls held a minute of silence on 28 October to honour the victims. Madrid and Seville were among those that took part, Reuters reported.

The awards ceremony was a music event, but the words spoken from its stage were about the people who died and the families now waiting for news. The investigation is expected to set out what went wrong on the line.
