Spotify Plans AI Covers and Remixes Tool for Early 2027

Spotify could open an AI covers and remixes tool to its paying subscribers in the first quarter of 2027, the Financial Times reported on 30 October 2026.
The newspaper, citing people familiar with the plans, said the company is weighing a price of US$4 to US$5 a month on top of existing subscription fees. Neither the timing nor the price has been finalised, the paper said. Spotify declined to comment to the Financial Times.
The tool would let subscribers use artificial intelligence to make their own versions of songs by artists who have chosen to take part. Under the proposed plan, royalties from fan-made remixes would go to the artists behind the original songs. Royalties are the payments made when a song is streamed or otherwise used.
Spotify is also building a way for fan remixes to appear in playlists, with their plays credited to the original tracks on its charts, according to Music Business Worldwide.
Spotify has already signed licensing deals for the tool. A licensing deal gives a platform permission to use music in return for payment. Spotify's newsroom announced agreements with Universal Music Group on 21 May 2026, with Merlin on 4 August 2026, and with Believe on 20 October 2026. Merlin is a body that licenses music for independent labels, and Believe is a music distributor. The company's newsroom said the tool is designed for AI-powered remixes and covers rather than entirely new works, and that it will draw on songs from participating artists and songwriters. Talks with Sony Music Group and Warner Music Group are still continuing, according to Music Business Worldwide, and the publisher Kobalt is also among the signed partners.
The product could be unveiled around the Grammy Awards, which are scheduled for 7 February 2027, the same trade publication reported. The Grammys are the annual music awards run by the Recording Academy.
For subscribers, the plan would add a paid feature on top of their monthly fee. For artists, the key question is which of them choose to opt in, and what they receive from the remixes made with their songs. Spotify has not yet confirmed a launch date, a price or a final list of partners.
