Czech documentary maker Helena Třeštíková has been honoured for her contribution to the documentary genre at the Ji.hlava Documentary Film Festival, Variety reported.

The honour comes with her best-known subject in the spotlight. Třeštíková directed "Bára – Diary of a Rockstar", a 50-year time-lapse documentary about the singer Bára Basiková. Time-lapse means the film is built from scenes shot at long intervals, so years pass in minutes on screen.

Třeštíková began filming Basiková in 1996. The shoot was one of a series of 10 time-lapse documentaries, filmed over five years, about women working in different professions. When filming began, Basiková's husband stayed home to look after the children while she worked and supported the family.

Basiková's career started in rock. She sang with the bands Precedens and Stromboli before the Velvet Revolution, the peaceful uprising that ended Communist rule in Czechoslovakia in 1989. Třeštíková said both bands carried a subtle anti-regime feeling and had a significant impact. After 1989, Basiková moved into musicals. Třeštíková described her performance in "Jesus Christ Superstar" as dazzling.

The project grew over time. After five years of filming, a first film, "Bára B. – Live", was completed and broadcast on television. Třeštíková later worked with the production company Negativ to keep filming chapters of Basiková's life, and she extended the timeline by 20 years using archival footage. A three-part television version of "Bára: Diary of a Rockstar" was also cut, with longer scenes and extra material.

The film's life away from the cinema screen is as varied as its subject. Basiková has written a book that was later adapted into a stage play. She also publicly backed Petr Pavel during the Czech presidential election. Over the 30 years of filming, she went through three marriages and three divorces, as the documentary follows her personal life alongside her work.

The honour lands at the 30th Ji.hlava festival, which is devoted to documentary film. Its programme was unveiled on 8 October 2026, and the festival's film about choreographer Jiří Kylián opened the event. The festival also announced its first awards on 25 October 2026, and "Bára – Diary of a Rockstar" appears in its Special Event section. Its industry programme runs from 27 to 30 October, and the Inspiration Forum featured the writers David Wengrow and Lea Ypi.

For anyone who has followed Basiková's music or the Czech documentary scene, the recognition marks a long working relationship between a filmmaker and her subject. For everyone else, it is a reminder that some documentaries take decades to make.
