Russian Newspaper Novaya Gazeta Announces It Is Shutting Down

Novaya Gazeta, a Russian newspaper, has announced that it is ending its existence. In a statement published on its own website on October 30, 2026, the paper said it has been killed, and it set out a closing timetable: it will turn off the lights in its home of 30 years and shut down its servers on November 9.
The paper said that Russian authorities and Russian security services forced its newsroom to end its work. Al Jazeera reported the shutdown as a response to pressure from the authorities, and the newspaper's own account puts the state at the centre of the decision.
Reuters reported that the paper was forced to close its doors, and said it had ceased operations after 33 years. Novaya Gazeta Europe, which published its own report on the closure, described the paper as having operated for more than 30 years.
Agence France-Presse said the closure followed years of repression targeting the paper's journalists.
