Arsenal lost to League Two side Fleetwood Town on a penalty shoot-out on Tuesday night, and the evening left a lasting mark on 16-year-old Max Dowman. He was sent off in the 85th minute of the Carabao Cup tie after reacting to a heavy challenge from Harrison Neal.

The Carabao Cup is England's league cup, a knockout competition where clubs from every level of the professional game can meet. Fleetwood sit in League Two, the fourth tier of English football. A penalty shoot-out is the way a cup tie is settled when the scores are level after extra time, with each side taking spot-kicks in turn.

Dowman will now serve a three-match ban. Arsenal appealed the red card, asking for the decision to be overturned, but the Football Association upheld it. Manager Mikel Arteta was open about his disappointment. He said he was "very disappointed" with the outcome and added that Arsenal were lucky Dowman "hasn't had a broken foot".

Arteta said he had warned the teenager before the game about how to handle provocation. He also spoke to Dowman as he walked off the pitch after the red card. On Thursday, he said the two had spoken again and that there were "no issues at all" between them.

The manager's message was blunt. "We are not in Disneyland, we are in the Premier League," Arteta said, according to Sky Sports. He said the club looks after Dowman closely, but that it also expects him to earn his place. Arteta said Dowman would be held to the same standards as the other first-team players.

This was not the first time Dowman had been sent off this month. He was also dismissed earlier in October while playing for England's Under-19 side against the United States.

For a player still a teenager, the lesson is an old one in football: the referee's whistle does not stop for talent. Arteta's words suggest he sees the red card as part of a learning curve, not a reason to write off a young player. The BBC reported that the club's approach is to keep Dowman close while asking him to control his temper.

Dowman will be missing for the next three matches, and the question for Arsenal now is how he responds when he returns.
