HBO Max has released a surprise Halloween episode of It: Welcome to Derry, and it is streaming now. The episode is called "A Story of Derry" and runs 30 minutes, according to Deadline.

The story follows three young people who venture into the Western Wood. They do so hundreds of years before the villain Pennywise appears in the town, and there they meet a terrifying ancient spirit.

The series is based on Stephen King's novel It, as Variety has reported. It premiered on HBO Max on October 26, 2025. It works as a prequel, meaning it tells events that happen before the story of the 2017 and 2019 It films.

The Halloween episode is a short, self-contained drop rather than a new season. It gives viewers a half-hour look back at the town's history between main seasons.

Season 2 is expected to arrive in late 2027 or 2028, Deadline reports. It will be set in 1935, during the Great Depression, and will centre on the massacre of the Bradley Gang. No firm premiere date has been announced for that season.

For fans waiting on the next full run, the Halloween episode is a quick way to return to Derry. It is available now on HBO Max, and it is the only new episode released so far in this stretch.
