Five creators and photographers who enthusiastically promoted Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses are now changing how they use them in public, or stopping altogether, according to reporting by Engadget. The shift reflects a sharp turn in public sentiment toward the glasses—from curiosity to concern—that has reached the point of self-censorship among early champions.
Danielle, a travel host in Florida, stopped wearing her glasses after learning Meta contractors review intimate images captured by the device, and after reports emerged of men using them to film women without consent. Christian Eisenbarth, a Los Angeles videographer given a pair of Ray-Ban Meta glasses, now keeps them off entirely outside his home, worried about being perceived as a "creep." Martino Wong, another early adopter, takes a middle approach: he avoids crowds and sometimes displays the glasses openly on his shirt—a visible signal that he isn't recording.
The backlash has become visible on Meta's own platforms. "Meta Glasses" trended negatively on Threads, and on Bluesky, users regularly post threats against people wearing what they call "pervert glasses." This marks a stark reversal from the launch reception, when the $299 price tag and Ray-Ban styling made the glasses seem like a regular accessory rather than a potential surveillance tool.
Two specific developments appear to have triggered this shift. Meta announced a cheaper glasses lineup, and reports surfaced of an unreleased facial recognition feature. According to Engadget's May 2025 reporting, Meta has been developing facial recognition that could scan people's faces without their knowledge—and they might not realize it's happening, even though the current hardware includes a recording indicator light.
That indicator light has become controversial in itself. In early July, Meta announced it would disable the camera if someone tampers with the recording LED—a safeguard intended to prevent circumvention. Yet Engadget reported that the launch of Meta's latest glasses lineup "not only reignited, but also intensified public anger" around the devices.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation raised concerns about this trajectory months earlier. The company updated its broader Privacy Policy in June 2026 and announced at CES 2026 a phased rollout of a teleprompter feature for its Ray-Ban Display glasses—which now pair an in-lens display with a smart wristband for control. These additions expand what the glasses can do, even as their reputation has grown more precarious.
The fundamental issue here is one of design. Wearable cameras that lack a clear, always-visible recording indicator put the burden of consent entirely on bystanders—people who have no way to opt out. The gesture some wearers now use, openly displaying the glasses on their shirt to signal they aren't recording, is an improvised fix for a design problem the hardware itself doesn't solve. It's also telling that much of the backlash organized on Threads, Meta's own social platform. The company's advantage in engineering viral engagement did not protect it from becoming a target of that same virality.
The broader context here draws a parallel to Google Glass, which faced similar "Glasshole" backlash a decade ago before retreating into enterprise and specialized use. The difference now lies in scale and capability. AI glasses ship at affordable consumer prices with built-in computer vision, and facial recognition is openly on the product roadmap rather than buried in a prototype.
