Leicester Go Top of the Prem With 22-16 Win at Bristol

Leicester Tigers have moved to the top of the Gallagher Premiership after beating Bristol Bears 22-16 at Ashton Gate on Friday night.
The Tigers scored four tries, which earned them the maximum points on offer: the win, plus a bonus point for crossing the try line four times. Bristol also picked up a bonus point for losing narrowly, by seven points or fewer. The result put Leicester above Gloucester at the top of the table before the rest of the round's fixtures were played.
Leicester's tries came from Freddie Steward, Adam Radwan, Ollie Hassell-Collins and Jamie Blamire. Billy Searle added one conversion, the extra kick a team takes after a try for two more points. Steward's try came in his 100th Premiership start, a milestone for the full-back.
Bristol's 16 points came from a try by Louis Rees-Zammit, his fifth Premiership try of the season, plus one conversion and three penalties from James Williams. A penalty is a kick at goal awarded after an opponent breaks the rules, and it is worth three points.
The match was not without its stoppages. Matias Moroni and Tom Jordan were both sin-binned for high tackles, which meant ten minutes each off the pitch. Bristol were reduced to 13 players for part of the game, and Leicester took full advantage of the numerical advantage while it lasted.
Bristol had marked the fixture as their annual Remembrance game, and the club had planned tributes around the match. The Tigers' own club website described the result as the end of the Premiership block before the Nations Championship break, the stretch of autumn when club teams pause so that players can join up with their countries.
For Leicester, the win was about more than the table. Tight, scrappy away games at this stage of the season often come down to who keeps their discipline when the pressure rises. The Tigers scored four times and kept their shape with fewer players, which is a useful sign of where they stand.
Gloucester were due to play Northampton on Saturday at 17:30 GMT, so the top spot could shift again after the weekend. For now, Leicester sit first, and Bristol leave Ashton Gate with a losing bonus point and a lot to think about.
