Ciara Mageean, the middle-distance runner who won 1500 metres gold at the 2024 European Championships, has died at the age of 34.

Mageean was from Portaferry in Northern Ireland. She represented Ireland at the Olympic Games in 2016 and 2020. The 1500 metres, a race of just under a mile, was her event. It rewards patience, good positioning and a fast finish, and she was known for running it with a strong last lap.

She won her European title in Rome in 2024. Two years earlier, at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, she had taken silver in the 1500m for Northern Ireland. Her route to Rome was not smooth. She withdrew from the 2024 Paris Olympics because of an Achilles injury, a problem with the tendon at the back of the ankle that many runners find slow to heal.

In May 2025, Mageean was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer. Doctors use the term stage four when cancer has spread from where it started to other parts of the body. She continued to share her life in public during the months that followed, and she did so with the same candour she had brought to her racing.

Her personal life also made headlines this autumn. In October, BBC News reported that she had married her long-term partner, Thomas Moran, in a small civil ceremony in Belfast.

The news of her death was reported by BBC Sport on 1 November 2026. Her family, friends and former teammates will be mourning her, and athletics fans across Ireland and Northern Ireland will remember a runner who carried her country's colours at two Olympics and reached the top of European middle-distance running.
