One person was killed and eight others were wounded in a shooting outside Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, after the Magic City Classic football game on Saturday night, according to The Guardian.

The shooting happened just after 7:50 p.m. near the 400 block of Graymont Avenue, on stadium property where vendors had set up. By then, most spectators and families had left the area, the Guardian reported. Legion Field is at 400 Graymont Avenue West.

The game is the annual meeting of Alabama State and Alabama A&M, two historically Black universities whose rivalry has been played for more than 100 years. Magic City Classic describes it as the largest historically Black college football game in the country. Nearly 70,000 fans attended this year's game, which Alabama A&M won 31-28.

Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett addressed the shooting at a news conference. He called it a "senseless act of violence" and thanked those who helped at the scene, according to WBRC.

Police spokesperson De'Rell Freeman provided details on the investigation. One person was detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning, and multiple weapons were found and secured by police. Freeman's office did not describe a motive in the details provided.

Police said one of the wounded was in critical condition and seven others were in stable condition, according to WVTM. Tailgating around the stadium was suspended after the shooting.
