Carney announces six federal by-elections for Dec. 7

Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that six federal by-elections will be held on December 7, 2026. The ridings are spread across Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan, according to a news release announcing the votes.
A by-election is a vote held to fill a single seat in the House of Commons, the elected chamber of Parliament, between general elections. Each seat is a riding, an electoral district that elects one member of Parliament. Elections Canada, the independent agency that runs federal votes, handles elections of this kind.
Two of the six ridings are in Ontario. According to The Globe and Mail, they are Brantford—Brant South and Scarborough North.
Quebec has three of the contests. They are Laurier—Sainte-Marie, Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie and Saint-Hyacinthe—Bagot—Acton.
Saskatchewan has one. The riding holding a by-election there is Yorkton—Melville.
Voters in all six ridings will go to the polls on the same day, which is December 7.
