Director Michael Mann was hospitalised after he accidentally shot himself in the leg at a gun range in Los Angeles on Saturday, 31 October, according to Variety.

The shooting happened at about 4 p.m. at Range L.A., a shooting range where people practise with firearms. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the incident. Mann was in stable condition when officers were called, Variety reported.

His representatives said the injury came while Mann was trying to holster his gun. A weapon went off while it was in the holster, they said, causing a superficial wound. A superficial injury is one that affects only the surface of the body. Mann was treated and was being released from hospital, the representatives said.

TMZ also reported the incident, under a headline describing Mann as having accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Mann is 83 years old. He is known for films including Heat and The Insider, and he most recently directed Ferrari (2023). That film starred Adam Driver as the racing car founder Enzo Ferrari, with Penelope Cruz as his wife, Laura.

Gun range accidents are not common among film directors, and this one has drawn attention because of Mann's name. No charges have been reported.
