Elizabeth Holmes Documentary Edges Clayface for Halloween Weekend No. 1

A24's documentary You Can See Everything finished at the top of the North American box office over the Halloween weekend, by about $200,000. Studio estimates reported by Variety put the film at $10.6 million over the weekend.
The film is a documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, the Silicon Valley founder whose company Theranos collapsed amid fraud charges. It runs more than three hours. A24 says it follows Holmes as she invites a skeptical film crew to document the 34 days before she is sent to prison. The film cost $7 million to produce, and it had earned $63.88 million in the United States and Canada to date. It has not yet opened internationally. This weekend it widened to 3,242 cinemas.
Right behind it was DC's Clayface, an R-rated origin story about the Batman villain. It was estimated at $10.4 million from 3,478 theatres in its second weekend. The film opened in late October to $24 million, and its North American total now stands at $44.1 million. Worldwide it has made $83 million, according to Variety. Its production cost was $44 million, the amount spent making the film before marketing.
The weekend's combined takings came to roughly $64 million. Last year's Halloween weekend brought in $49 million across all films, led by Regretting You and Black Phone 2. This year Halloween fell on a Saturday, and no new wide releases opened, so the films already in cinemas carried the weekend.
Laika's Wildwood held at No. 3 with an estimated $7.5 million, a drop of 39% from its opening. It has earned $25 million domestically and $35 million globally, against a production budget of $100 million. Black Bear's Wicker took $4.1 million from 2,374 venues, down 28%, for $13.2 million so far.
The result is a close race between a small-budget documentary and a superhero spin-off, both still drawing crowds three and two weekends into their runs. The next set of numbers, due Monday, will show whether the margin holds.
