Russian authorities have detained a teenager suspected of planning an attack at a park in Moscow, after receiving a warning from the United States. The Interfax news agency reported this, citing the Federal Security Service (FSB), Russia's main domestic security agency. Al Jazeera

The park is the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve in southern Moscow. On Saturday, the US Embassy in Moscow issued a security alert warning of a "credible threat of a mass casualty event" at the site. The embassy urged people to avoid the Tsaritsyno area and said the US government was coordinating with Russian authorities on a response. The reserve was temporarily closed that day. Moscow police were placed on high alert. DW

The detained suspect is a Russian citizen who has not been publicly identified. According to Al Jazeera's report, the suspect posted photos on TikTok wearing a balaclava and tactical clothing and holding what appeared to be an automatic weapon. Some of the photos were taken at Tsaritsyno, and one carried the caption "I found a place."

A search of the suspect's home turned up the clothing and accessories seen in the photos. The suspect's phone showed searches related to terrorist attacks and mass killings, as well as a subscription to a neo-Nazi Telegram channel.

Russia's response has been framed in several ways. The FSB said, "We are grateful to the American side for providing the information." Russian authorities also said they were taking "appropriate" measures after the embassy's warning. Russia's Investigative Committee, which looks into criminal cases, is considering what legal action to take against the suspect.

The US warning followed an established practice. The American intelligence community works under a principle it calls the "duty to warn," which the Associated Press reported came into play before a previous deadly attack on the outskirts of Moscow. AP
