A 14-year-old boy has handed himself in to West Midlands police over a video that appears to show a Coventry City fan taunting Sunderland supporters with a picture of Bradley Lowery.

The footage was posted on social media and relates to the Premier League match between the two clubs on Saturday afternoon. Premier League is the top tier of English men's football, with 20 clubs.

Bradley was a Sunderland fan. He was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare cancer that affects young children, and he died in 2017 at the age of six. He became a much-loved figure around the club, and fans across the country knew his story.

West Midlands Police said a thorough investigation has been launched into the incident. They said the boy who came forward will be spoken to in due course.

Coventry City said on Sunday that it was aware of footage circulating online linked to the incident. The club said it does not tolerate offensive behaviour and will work with the relevant authorities to decide what action to take.

Bradley's mother, Gemma Lowery, issued a statement through the Bradley Lowery Foundation, the charity set up in her son's name. She said he deserves to be remembered with love, not hate.

This is not the first time a picture of Bradley has been used this way. In 2023, two men were arrested after using his image to taunt Sunderland supporters. Later that year, a fan who mocked him received a suspended sentence, and the judge called his actions utterly appalling.

A suspended sentence means a jail term that is not served unless the person breaks the conditions set by the court. For now, the focus is on the police inquiry and on what the boy and the club say next.

For many Sunderland supporters, the video will have been a painful reminder of a child they never stopped thinking about. Football crowds often give strangers a shared sense of belonging. This incident shows how quickly that feeling can be turned against a grieving family.
