Canavan Confirms Bid for Capricornia Seat

Nationals leader Matt Canavan has confirmed he will run for the federal seat of Capricornia at the next election. The seat is held by Michelle Landry, who has announced she will retire from politics and will not recontest it.

The Guardian reported that Landry is based in Rockhampton. Capricornia is a lower-house seat, meaning it sits in the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of federal parliament.

Canavan is a Queensland senator and the Shadow Minister for Trade, Investment and Tourism. He took over the Nationals leadership in March 2026. He is a Yeppoon local.

Speaking about his decision, Canavan said keeping the seat was needed to change the government and to keep delivering for Central Queensland. News.com.au reported the confirmation.

The move could set up a contest with James Ashby, a director of One Nation. The ABC has reported that Ashby is considering a One Nation run for Capricornia.
