Aston Villa have dropped their threat of legal action against Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, after he apologised for comments he made about the club. The BBC reported the development.

On Friday, Villa said they would take legal action over what they called "unacceptable insults" made on the Stick to Football podcast. Carragher, a former Liverpool defender who now works as a TV pundit, which means he gives analysis and opinion on matches, made the remarks on the show.

On Saturday, Carragher apologised to Villa and their supporters. He said his language was "clumsy and wrong", and described his comments as "tongue in cheek", meaning he did not intend them to be taken seriously. Reuters also reported the apology.

The row had several strands. Carragher told Villa fans to "shut up" in response to their criticism of him. He also linked Unai Emery, Villa's manager since 2022, with replacing Michael Carrick at Manchester United. Emery has previously managed Paris St-Germain and Arsenal. Carragher was offering his own opinion on the managerial merry-go-round, not reporting any approach or deal. Villa have not commented on that point.

Villa never started legal proceedings. Once the apology came, the club ended its threat.

What stands out is how fast a podcast argument turned into talk of court action, and how quickly it faded once the apology arrived. For Villa fans, the matter closes with a few words of regret rather than a legal case.
