Former councillor Philip Young pleads guilty to 56 charges against wife

Philip Young, a former Conservative councillor, has pleaded guilty to 56 charges of drugging and sexually abusing his wife, Joanne Young, over a 13-year period at their home in Swindon, Wiltshire, according to The Guardian. Young, who is 50, is the central figure in a case that has also brought four other men to court. Joanne Young is 49 and has waived her right to anonymity, which means she has agreed to be publicly named.
Four men are on trial at Winchester Crown Court, accused of sexually abusing her. Reuters reported that the trial began on 27 October 2026, and that the complainant had been advertised online before being drugged and had been filmed while being abused. Joanne Young gave evidence for the first time on Wednesday, according to AFP.
The defendants have given different accounts. Connor Sanderson-Doyle, 32, of Swindon, told the court he had no indication Joanne Young was drugged, intoxicated or acting against her will. He said he believed a sex advert had been placed by a couple and that she was in agreement. He also said he kept his balaclava on when he realised Philip Young was filming with a camcorder, and that he lost his security clearance, needed for sensitive defence work for the Ministry of Defence, after being charged.
Norman Macksoni, 48, of Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, denied one count of rape. According to police interview material reported in court, he told officers he had never had sex without consent and described Joanne Young as "totally coherent". Mohammed Hassan, 38, of Swindon, pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual touching. Richard Wilkins, 62, of Toothill, Swindon, pleaded not guilty to one count of rape and one count of assault by penetration.
Dean Hamilton, 47, of Street, Somerset, admitted one charge of assault by penetration, two charges of sexual assault and one charge of rape. Two of the four men on trial said they had met the couple through online adverts and a swinging website, which is a term for a social scene where couples meet other people for sex. Two of the men said they had no idea Joanne Young had been drugged.
The case has been building for some time. In December 2025, the Crown Prosecution Service, the body that brings criminal cases in England and Wales, said six men had been charged with more than 60 sexual offences against a woman over a 13-year period. In the same period, Philip Young was remanded into custody ahead of an appearance at Swindon Magistrates' Court on 23 December. He later appeared at Winchester Crown Court on 23 January 2026, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.
