A24 has entered Jordan Firstman's film Club Kid for Golden Globes consideration as a drama, not as a musical or comedy. The Hollywood Reporter reported the choice on Monday, 2 November, and said the studio made it in close consultation with Firstman, who wrote, directed and stars in the film.

The Golden Globes give separate awards to drama films and to comedy or musical films. A studio's choice of category decides which group of films a movie is measured against.

Club Kid is Firstman's feature directorial debut. It had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, a showcase that runs alongside the festival's main competition. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the screening drew a seven-minute standing ovation.

The film also changed hands in a hurry. A24 bought it for $17 million after an overnight bidding war, and The Hollywood Reporter called the deal the biggest sale of the Cannes festival. A bidding war is a contest in which several buyers push the price up until one of them wins.

The story follows a club promoter who stays too long at the party. Firstman plays Peter. The Los Angeles Times describes the character as a queer New York party promoter who is blindsided by unexpected fatherhood. Cara Delevingne and Diego Calva also star, according to an A24 post on Facebook.

Firstman has named two key inspirations: An Unmarried Woman (1978) and Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film has a busy autumn ahead. It was brought to the Telluride festival after its Cannes buzz, and it was added to the lineup of the Zurich Film Festival. A24's website lists a theatrical release for Friday, 6 November 2026.

Other films this awards season have taken the comedy or musical route. Luca Guadagnino's Artificial was submitted as a comedy, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and Obsession has been put forward in the musical and comedy categories.

The film opens in US cinemas four days after the Golden Globes category submission was reported.
