Michael Wilbon is stepping away from ESPN for an indefinite period to deal with health issues. He announced the break on Monday, 2 November, and said it covers his work on Pardon the Interruption and his NBA coverage for ESPN and ABC.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Wilbon missed last week's episodes of the sports debate show after feeling exhausted and lifeless. He has co-hosted Pardon the Interruption, usually called PTI, with Tony Kornheiser since the show began on 22 October 2001.

Wilbon said Kornheiser and others close to him urged him to take time away. He also said he is diabetic, and he linked his health struggles to a heavy travel schedule and to ignoring his own care. He was clear that his condition has nothing to do with alcohol or gambling.

ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said the network fully supports Wilbon and looks forward to welcoming him back when he is ready. For now, Pablo Torre and Frank Isola will fill in on PTI this week. No return date has been announced.

The break comes weeks after the show marked its 25th anniversary. Kornheiser and Wilbon hosted back-to-back 30-minute episodes on 22 October to celebrate. In September 2025, both men signed new multi-year extensions to keep hosting past that milestone.

Wilbon turns 68 later this month. For viewers, the change is simple to describe: a regular fixture of weekday sports talk is off the air for now, and a rotating group of hosts is in the chair. Anyone who tunes in will see familiar names filling the seats while the network waits for its co-host to recover.
