Quentin Halys beat Arthur Fery 7-6 7-5 in the first round of the Rolex Paris Masters on Tuesday, sending the British player out in straight sets. The match was scheduled from 11am on Court 1, and the BBC reported the result.

The first set was the turning point. It went to a tiebreak, a mini-game played when a set reaches 6-6. The first player to seven points, with a lead of two, wins it. Halys had to save two set points, moments when Fery was one point away from taking the set, before winning the breaker. Fery could not recover, and Halys closed out the second set 7-5.

What makes a moment like that matter is what it does to the player who survives it. Saving set points keeps the opponent's momentum off the scoreboard, and Halys kept his. He now plays seventh seed Frances Tiafoe. A seed is a top-ranked player placed in the draw so the strongest names are kept apart early. Tiafoe had a first-round bye, which means he skipped the opening round.

For Fery, this was his first match at the Paris Masters. He has had a strong run this year. He reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon, and in August he lost the Winston-Salem Open final to Ignacio Buse. Earlier in the season he beat No. 86 Duckworth in Cincinnati and No. 80 Cilic in Shanghai.

Two sets, one tiebreak, and a seventh seed waiting next. Halys moves on.
