Rockstar Games has confirmed that the Grand Theft Auto VI pre-load file will require up to 212GB, with the exact footprint depending on the device. The Verge reported the storage figure on November 3, 2026, and Rockstar's own newswire post carries the same pre-load schedule.

Pre-loading, which is a full download of the game data ahead of release that unlocks on launch day, opens on November 10 on both current console platforms. The start times are expressed differently, however. On PlayStation 5, pre-loading begins at midnight in the local time zone. On Xbox Series X|S, it begins at 12AM GMT. The game launches on November 19, nine days after the pre-load window opens.

Rockstar's newswire announcement also points players to a dedicated support page covering the pre-load process. Rockstar had previously announced in June that pre-orders would open on June 25.

The game is priced at $79.99 and is available only as a digital download. Physical versions contain just a code in the box, so the game data itself is delivered over the network rather than from disc. The Verge reported that structure alongside the storage requirement.

For anyone managing internal SSD capacity, 212GB is the operative number. A console with a nearly full drive will need headroom cleared before the download can finish. The sizing matters more in a digital-only release, where there is no disc to fall back on. Owners who expect to play on launch day will need to plan around the transfer, not just the purchase.

In my view, the more interesting question is where the delivery load lands. A single title of this size, distributed digitally at the same time to a large installed base on two platforms, concentrates a substantial volume of network traffic into the same window. Whether that shows up as slow pre-load speeds, CDN congestion, or no visible effect at all will become clear only once the window opens.

The practical benefit for players with the storage and bandwidth is the timing. Because the pre-load window runs nine days ahead of launch, the bulk of the transfer can happen before November 19 rather than during it. For a download this size, that separation can mean the difference between a launch-day queue and a quiet installation over the week before.
