Bethesda has confirmed that its next Elder Scrolls game will be called The Elder Scrolls VI Sentinel. The Verge reported the naming on 3 November 2026.

The confirmation came in a video celebrating 40 years of Bethesda Game Studios. The video runs under 10 minutes. Studio chief Todd Howard announced the name and described it as the "perfect time" to fully name the game. The game will be set in Hammerfell.

Bethesda shared no details beyond the name. No release window (the period in which a game is expected to ship), platform list, or gameplay footage accompanied the announcement. Xbox Wire's Spotlight section features two items tied to the news: one titled "The Elder Scrolls VI: Official Name Reveal" and another titled "Celebrating 40 Years of Bethesda Game Studios." Xbox Wire hosts both.

The franchise's sixth entry has been known for some time. More than eight years had passed since Bethesda officially announced that the sixth Elder Scrolls game existed. Until now, the project went by a codename, an internal working title used during development. The new name is the first fixed identifier the public has for it.

In my view, the announcement is better read as a procedural step than a promotional one. Studios usually replace a codename with a product name once marketing and documentation are ready to carry it, and a title alone says little about scope, engine (the core software a game is built on), or timing. Players and analysts will treat the name as a placeholder for information that has not yet been released.

The broader context here is the choice of venue. Bethesda tied the name to an anniversary of its studio rather than a standalone reveal event. That places the franchise within the studio's own history, a deliberate decision by the publisher. The name arrived as a secondary element of a larger celebration, so its weight will depend on what follows.

For developers and platform watchers, the practical consequence is limited for now. The title and setting are confirmed, and the studio has committed to nothing beyond them. Anything about the technical stack, release schedule, or distribution model would be speculation at this stage.

Still, a confirmed name matters for a franchise that has gone so long without one. It gives press, retailers, modding communities, and the studio's own teams a fixed reference point. Once Bethesda adds detail, the discussion can move from whether the game exists to what it actually is.
