Ashley Moody wins Florida's US Senate special election

Republican Ashley Moody won Florida's special election for the US Senate on November 3, defeating Democrat Angie Nixon. KATV reported that Moody won with over 50% of the vote.
A special election is a vote held outside the regular election cycle to fill a seat. Moody ran as the incumbent. She was appointed to the Senate by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in January 2025, after Marco Rubio became US secretary of state. Before joining the Senate, Moody served as Florida's attorney general, the state's chief legal officer. The Guardian reported that she will serve the rest of Rubio's Senate term, which runs until the 2028 election.
Nixon is a Democratic state lawmaker in Florida and, as The Guardian describes her, a democratic socialist. Before the vote, Senators Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rallied with her in central Florida.
The contest took place in a state where registration favours one party. According to The Guardian, Florida Republicans have built a lead of 1.5 million voters in the state's voter registrations.
