Democrat Gina Hinojosa has defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott in the Texas governor's race, The Guardian reported. The contest was held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. NBC News projected Hinojosa as the winner, and Abbott conceded to her.

Hinojosa will become Texas's first Latina governor. She is a five-term state representative from Austin, and she previously served as president of the Austin school board.

Abbott had served three terms as governor and was seeking a fourth. Voters denied him that term, according to The 19th.

The result also ends a long stretch of Republican control of the governor's office. No Democrat had won the Texas governor's mansion since Ann Richards was elected in 1990. Beto O'Rourke, a Democrat, lost to Abbott in the 2022 race, when he sought to unseat him.

The New York Times' live results page for the race listed 7,197,019 total reported votes. The Texas governor's office is the state's top executive post, and the governor serves as head of the state government in Austin, the state capital.
