Democrats win back control of the US Senate in midterm elections

Democrats have won back control of the US Senate, the upper chamber of Congress, in the 2026 midterm elections. The Associated Press reported that Democrats have retaken the chamber, and the New York Times and PBS reported the same result.
Democrats needed 51 seats to take control of the Senate. The BBC reported that Democrat Josh Turek is projected to win the Iowa seat, according to a projection from CBS, and that Democrats hold a 51-member majority so far following that result.
NBC News reported that Democrats secured their majority by winning several states that President Donald Trump carried by ten percentage points or more in 2024.
Democrats also took a Texas Senate seat, their first there in decades, the BBC reported. Reuters reported that Democrat Annie Andrews defeated Trump-backed Graham, and the Associated Press reported that Andrews had won a race in the South.
The contest for the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of Congress, has also gone to Democrats. Reuters reported that US media outlets projected Democrats would win back control of the House.
