Sydney Swans player Tom Papley has returned a positive preliminary drug test after being pulled over by New South Wales Police, according to the ABC.

The stop happened on Monday. Police pulled him over for a roadside licence check, and he was driving on a suspended licence. The suspension was due to an unpaid parking fine. Police issued him a court attendance notice, which is a document telling a person to appear in court on a set date.

The drug test was taken during the same stop. Papley completed a random test that gave a positive preliminary indication. A preliminary result is an early screening result, not a final finding. A second sample has been taken for analysis, and results from that sample will take at least four weeks to be received.

The Swans said in a club statement that Papley told the club about the matter immediately. The AFL has also been informed. The league runs the national drug code that governs players, and any next steps will be decided under it.

Papley has played 216 games for the Sydney Swans. That is a long career at one club.

For the Swans, the next month is about waiting. The second sample will decide whether the early result stands, and nobody outside the testing process can say how that will go. Until then, the club and the league have made no further public comment.

Anyone who follows the AFL will know how quickly a roadside stop can turn into a headline. The facts here are narrower. A licence problem, a court notice, and a preliminary drug result that needs a second test before anyone can say more.
