Carpenter scores within six minutes off the bench as Chelsea beat Roma 2-0

Ellie Carpenter came on as a substitute and scored within six minutes, helping Chelsea beat Roma 2-0.
Chelsea needed a goal, and the decision to bring on a defender drew a question from inside the club. Head coach Sonia Bompastor said a member of her technical staff, the coaching team, had asked whether sending on a defensive player was the right call. Carpenter answered the doubt quickly.
The 26-year-old Australian is a full-back, one of the defenders who patrol the flanks. This season she has started all but one of Chelsea's Women's Super League matches. Chelsea remain unbeaten and top of the table, having dropped points only in their opening-weekend draw with Aston Villa.
Carpenter is not just a defender who waits for the ball. She has scored four goals from full-back or wing-back, the attacking role for a defender who pushes high up the pitch. Her six-goal season count includes four goals and one assist in the league, and she has created 19 chances, a measure of how many passes lead to a shooting opportunity. Only Manchester City winger Lauren Hemp and Tottenham's Drew Spence have created more chances from open play, meaning play that is not from a corner or free kick.
Her goal in Chelsea's 6-0 win at Charlton came in the 13th minute. That day she also made three tackles and won 12 ball recoveries, the most of any Chelsea player. Recoveries count the times a player wins the ball back after it has come loose. She ranks second in the squad for successful tackles.
Carpenter has also been busy in the opposition penalty area. She has 56 touches inside it this season, fewer than only Khadija Shaw, Lauren Hemp and Victoria Pelova. She has completed 141 successful passes in the final third, more than any other Chelsea player.
Chelsea have conceded four goals all season, the fewest of any side in the WSL. Their defence has been hard to break down, and Carpenter's work at both ends of the pitch has helped.
Carpenter joined Chelsea from Lyon in July 2025 and signed a four-year contract. She and Bompastor already knew each other well. They won the Champions League together at Lyon in 2022, so the trust between them goes back years.
The next chapter will test whether one substitute appearance was a moment or a pattern. For now, Chelsea have a full-back who scores, creates, and wins the ball back, and a coach who has the evidence to answer her staff.
