Mika Stojsavljevic, a 17-year-old British player ranked world No. 411 at the time, beat Sofia Kenin 6-3 4-6 6-4 at the Hong Kong Open. It was the first main-draw win of her WTA Tour career, and it came against a player who has won a Grand Slam title.

Kenin won the Australian Open in 2020, beating Garbine Muguruza in the final for her first Grand Slam title. At the time of this match she was ranked 224 places above Stojsavljevic. BBC Sport reported the result.

Stojsavljevic did not expect to be on court with Kenin. She lost in qualifying, the tournament's entry round, and only got into the main draw as a "lucky loser". That is the name for a player who loses in qualifying but moves into the main draw when another entrant pulls out. She found out she would face Kenin only an hour before the match.

She won the first set 6-3, then lost the second 4-6. The third set went to a 6-4 scoreline, which meant she was the one who pushed through when it counted. A set goes to the first player to six games, as long as they lead by two.

Stojsavljevic has been building toward results like this for a while. She won the 2024 US Open junior title, the first Briton to do so in 15 years. She reached a career-high fifth in the junior world rankings, and she started playing at Ealing Lawn Tennis Club in north-west London when she was seven. She turned professional in 2025.

Her senior results have been steadily improving. In April she beat then-world No. 56 Talia Gibson in qualifying for the Billie Jean King Cup, the international team competition. She also reached the quarter-finals of a WTA 125 event in Birmingham, a tier of tournaments just below the top level.

Her next match is in Hong Kong's second round, against world No. 67 Zeynep Sonmez.
