Filmmaker Wyatt Maw is making his feature debut with Ashland, a documentary that will have its world premiere at DOC NYC. Deadline revealed the film's trailer as an exclusive on 4 November 2026.

The film is set on the sacred plains of Eastern Montana. It follows people living in the southeast of the state, near the site of the Battle of Little Bighorn. The festival runs it for 91 minutes, according to DOC NYC's film listing.

Maw shot the film on Super 16mm, a narrower film format that was once common for independent and documentary work. Filming ran across eight years, so the project has been in the making for most of the time the film's subjects have been on screen. The trailer reveal confirms the film's place in the festival's lineup. Ashland is selected for the U.S. Competition section, which DOC NYC announced in an October 2026 festival listing, and it is among the films the festival lists as 2026 releases.

Maw is a graduate of the American Film Institute, a Los Angeles film school, and a mentee of the director Terrence Malick. He has worked closely with Malick's approach to landscape and place.

INDOX and Kyle Martin are the film's executive producers. In a film's credits, executive producers usually handle financing and business arrangements rather than the daily work of shooting. Deadline first reported on INDOX's role on the project in April 2026, in a separate report on the company and Maw.

DOC NYC is one of the largest documentary festivals in the United States, and its premieres often serve as a first public showing for films that later look for distributors. For Ashland, the next public step is the world premiere at the festival.
