Jets Erase a 4-0 Deficit, Beat Canadiens 5-4 in Overtime

The Winnipeg Jets were down 4-0 in the third period. Then they scored four goals in two minutes and six seconds, and Dylan Samberg won it in overtime. Winnipeg beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 on Tuesday night at Bell Centre, and the Jets snapped a nine-game losing streak.
The comeback was the latest four-goal rally to win a game in NHL history, according to the Jets' official recap. It started with a rookie named Tyrel Bauer. He was playing in his 10th NHL game and was a sixth-round draft pick. With 2:39 left in regulation, he scored his first career NHL goal to cut the lead to 4-1.
Morgan Barron followed with a goal at 18:03 of the third period, making it 4-2. Then Kyle Connor scored twice in 27 seconds to tie the game. Both of his goals came with Montreal's goalie pulled for an extra attacker, and the second one came on a power play, when Winnipeg had a one-skater advantage. The tying goal came with 33 seconds left.
Bauer also earned an assist on Barron's goal. Together with a fight he had earlier in the game, that completed what hockey fans call a Gordie Howe hat-trick, a goal, an assist and a fight in one game. Hockey people use the name for a player who does all three in a single night.
The rest of the night looked very different for most of 60 minutes. Montreal scored first, when Owen Beck put in a shot at 3:05 of the first period. Josh Anderson made it 2-0 before the first intermission. Cole Caufield scored twice, including a goal 46 seconds into the third period that made it 4-0. Caufield's two goals both came on the power play, when Montreal had the extra skater.
Montreal goalie Jacob Fowler was the story for two periods. The 21-year-old was named the NHL's rookie of the month for October. He made 19 saves in the second period alone. Winnipeg took 19 shots in that same period, its highest single-period total of the season, according to the Jets. Most of them did not go in.
Winnipeg had also given up the first goal in 12 of its 16 games this season. The Jets had lost seven-nothing to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday. They had not won since October 13, before this game.
Then came overtime, where the first goal wins and there is no shootout. Samberg scored at 3:30 of the extra period to finish it. Winnipeg head coach Scott Arniel's team had gone from a shutout-looking loss to a win in one night. Montreal head coach Martin St Louis saw his team lose a lead it had held for most of the game.
For Winnipeg, the win ends a long, ugly stretch and gives the team something to build on. For Montreal, Fowler's strong night was not enough. Both teams play again soon, and both will remember this one.
