Sixteen-year-old sprinter Bronson Hearn-Smith has signed with Matchroom's Talent Agency and secured a place on UK Athletics' Olympic Futures and Futures Relay Sprint programmes. He is still a few weeks short of his 17th birthday.

The Tiptree athlete made his biggest mark in July. He won gold in the 200 metres at the European Under-18 Championships, running 20.70 seconds in the final. That is a championship record, meaning no athlete has gone faster at that event. BBC Sport reported the time and the signing.

Olympic Futures is UK Athletics' development scheme for young athletes who are judged to have a route to the Olympic Games. The relay sprint strand focuses on sprinters who could one day run for Britain's relay teams. Being named to it gives athletes coaching, support and a clear pathway upwards.

He competes for Colchester Harriers Athletics Club and is listed by World Athletics as running the 60 metres, 100 metres and 200 metres for Great Britain & N.I. The world rankings place every athlete by their results, and he sits 407th in the men's 200 metres and 1096th in the men's 100 metres.

Speaking to BBC Essex, Hearn-Smith said he would try his "absolute hardest" to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Qualifying means meeting the entry standard or finishing high enough at trials to earn a place on the team. For a sprinter still in his teens, it is a long road with plenty of racing in between.

Clips of his running have also drawn millions of views on TikTok and YouTube. That reach is unusual for a teenage athlete, and it has taken his name well beyond the club track in Essex.

For now, the next step is simple. A 200 metre race lasts about 20 seconds, roughly the time it took him to win that European title.
