God of War Laufey Moves to May 2027

Santa Monica Studio has delayed God of War Laufey to May 20, 2027. The PlayStation 5 game had been scheduled for February 16, 2027, so the new date pushes the launch back a little over three months. The Verge reported the change on November 4, 2026.
The studio said the extra time will go toward finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential. That is the stated rationale. The material available to me does not say which systems or content areas the additional months will cover, so I will not guess beyond what the studio said.
The game is a God of War entry centred on Faye, the wife of Kratos. Deborah Ann Woll plays Faye. Her prominence is a useful reminder that a late-cycle schedule often rests on story and performance work that players only notice at the end.
Santa Monica Studio has also confirmed that God of War Laufey will be available on disc. IGN reported that confirmation in July 2026, months before the schedule change. The disc confirmation predates the delay.
In my view, the more telling detail is the gap between the two dates rather than the reason given for it. A February slot sits early in the first-party calendar, while a May date gives the team a longer runway before release. Publishers usually weigh that trade against quality assurance cycles, console certification and the marketing window. The studio has not tied its decision to any of those, so they remain general considerations rather than explanations of this delay.
Physical buyers feel the change sooner. Disc titles follow a fixed manufacturing and distribution calendar, so a date move has to reach retailers and collectors early enough for them to adjust orders. The disc confirmation means that calendar now points to a May 2027 target.
The broader context here is familiar to anyone who has followed large single-player productions. Delays like this are often framed as quality decisions, and the studio's language follows that pattern. Whether the extra months produce a noticeably more polished game can only be judged once players have it. What the announcement does establish is a firm new date, a confirmed physical release, and a studio that chose more time over an earlier launch. For a title with a long development history, that is a concrete set of facts to plan around.
