Comedian Jo Koy has built one of the most talked-about bits in his Netflix stand-up special around his late stepfather, Sgt. Fred Harrison, a decorated Army veteran who was battling cancer.

The special, "Jo Koy: Blue in the Face," debuted on Netflix in September. In it, Koy recounts taking Harrison, a devoted Los Angeles Dodgers fan, to a game that went into extra innings. The story is told for laughs, and it is also about a man Koy loved.

The bit has spread widely online. Its punchline pairs Harrison's two tours of duty in Vietnam with a joke about dying at a Dodgers game. During the routine, Koy mimics Harrison's oxygen mask by holding a microphone cord up to his nose, a small physical touch that audiences have singled out.

Koy explained how the bit came together in a Variety "Anatomy of a Joke: Spotlight" interview, presented by Icon Live. Variety reported the details of that conversation, including how the Dodgers material took shape on stage.

Koy has spoken about Harrison before, outside of comedy. In a 2023 Facebook post, he wrote that he had lost his hero, and he described Harrison as a father figure. Koy's post honours a man who served in the Army for two decades.

For many viewers, the bit works because it is specific. A stepfather, a ballpark, a cord held to a nose. It is a reminder that a comedy special can carry real grief, and that a joke about a hard subject can still make people laugh.
