Bloomberg reported on November 4, 2026 that the AI data center boom was set for upheaval after the U.S. election rout, and that Texas data center developers faced a worst-case scenario under newly elected Democratic Governor Gina Hinojosa (Bloomberg). For generators with Texas exposure, the policy question sits alongside a more immediate one: the power market itself.

Vistra's near-term results are the nearer test. Raymond James expected them to reflect softer ERCOT weather, lower load, and weaker power prices, according to a note reported on May 9 (Yahoo Finance). ERCOT is the Texas grid operator and the wholesale market where much of the state's power is bought and sold. A merchant generator sells power at market prices rather than under long-term fixed contracts, so weather-driven demand and spot prices (the price for power delivered now) move its unhedged margin. A softer summer and weaker prices would hit the part of the book that is not locked in. CNN's quote page for VST shows the shares down $11.96, or 8.57%, opening at $125.75 (CNN).

The hedge book is where the company's exposure is most visible. A hedge is a contract that fixes a price in advance, and a hedge book is the total of those contracts. In its third quarter 2025 results, Vistra reported it had hedged roughly 98% of expected generation volumes for 2025, about 96% for 2026, and about 70% for 2027 (Vistra). By its second quarter 2026 results, the company reported roughly 100% of expected 2026 volumes hedged and about 94% for 2027 (Vistra). The 2026 position was already close to fully covered. The change that matters is 2027, where the hedged share rose by roughly 24 percentage points (the simple gap between two percentages, here 70% to 94%) in about nine months.

Hedging fixes the price on contracted volume, so a weaker spot market reaches the income statement more slowly for those megawatt-hours. The cost is that the hedged portion also gives up upside if prices rise. For 2027, the question for analysts is how much of the year's margin is already set and at what level, and whether the unhedged remainder is large enough to matter if ERCOT prices soften further.

Reported net income also carries hedge accounting noise that is worth stripping out. Under mark-to-market accounting, forward positions are revalued at current prices each period, so gains and losses appear in earnings before any cash changes hands. Vistra's fourth quarter and full-year 2025 results showed net income of $944 million, including an $808 million unrealized loss from hedges expected to settle in future years (Vistra). Its first quarter 2026 results showed net income of $1,029 million, including a $723 million unrealized gain on the same kind of hedges (Vistra). The two quarters carry opposite signs.

In my view, the operating line and cash flow are the figures to compare, because mark-to-market swings on forward positions can move headline earnings sharply without any change in cash generation.

Vistra plans to report its third quarter 2026 financial and operating results on Friday, November 6, 2026, during a live conference call (Vistra). That print will land two days after the Bloomberg report on the Texas outlook.

Management commentary on 2027 hedge coverage, expected ERCOT load, and the forward curve (the prices traders currently pay for power delivered in future months) will matter more to the near-term picture than any single headline number.

For ordinary investors, the practical point is narrower than the policy debate. A generator with most of its next year already hedged is less exposed to a soft spot market in the short run, but not immune to one, and the degree of protection depends on how much of 2027 is still open. Whether the election outcome changes Texas data center demand, and by how much, is not something the reported facts settle. Those who follow the name will be watching the Friday call for how the company frames both the weather-driven softness Raymond James described and the open share of its 2027 volume.
