Harold Greene, a longtime Los Angeles television news anchor, has died at the age of 82. His family announced the death, and Deadline reported it on 5 November 2026.

His daughter Courtney said her father had "signed off for the last time" on Tuesday, 3 November. His daughter and his wife were with him when he died.

Greene spent decades in front of the camera in Los Angeles. He worked for ABC7 Eyewitness News, KCAL 9 News and CBS 2 News. ABC7 Los Angeles said its newsroom was mourning the loss of the longtime anchor and reporter. He also spent a period working in San Diego, where his on-air style was said to have inspired parts of Will Ferrell's Ron Burgundy character in the film Anchorman, according to Deadline.

Television news was not where he began. According to the Los Angeles Times, Greene started out as a news writer, cameraman and producer. Early in his career he worked in Santa Barbara.

His work was recognised with a long list of honours. Deadline reported that he received 10 Golden Mike Awards, two Emmy Awards and three Edward R. Murrow Awards. He also won twelve Los Angeles Press Club Awards and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism Award.

A memorial is being planned for after the holidays. No date or location has been announced so far.

For many viewers in Southern California, Greene was a familiar face at the top of the evening news, year after year. His family's announcement is a private one, but it is also a public farewell, and the people who worked beside him are now planning to say goodbye in their own way.
