Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong sentenced to 10 years in prison
Joshua Wong, a 30-year-old activist described as the international face of Hong Kong's democracy movement, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on a national security charge, according to Reuters. A national security charge is one brought over offences against the safety of the state.
It is Wong's second national security conviction. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to collusion, meaning cooperation, with foreign entities, according to Reuters. The BBC reported that the 10-year sentence was imposed for colluding with foreign forces.
Wong had previously received four years and eight months in jail in the national security trial of 47 Hong Kong democrats, a case in which Reuters reported the sentencing in 2024. He had been expected to be freed in January 2027, NBC News reported, but the new sentence extends the time he will spend in prison.
