Harlequins hooker Sam Riley has signed a new contract with the club, according to BBC Sport. The 25-year-old is a product of the Harlequins academy, the club's pathway for young players coming through from their teens.

Harlequins have not said how long the new deal runs. The club's head coach is Jason Gilmore.

Riley plays in the hooker position, one of the most specialised jobs in rugby union. Hookers sit in the middle of the front row of the scrum, the packed contest where the two sets of forwards push against each other before the ball is put in. They hook the ball back with a foot, and they throw the ball in at lineouts, when play restarts from the touchline after the ball has gone out of play.

The 25-year-old has made 89 first-team appearances for Harlequins. That means games for the senior side, rather than academy or development matches, so it is a sizeable body of work for a player still early in his career.

He has also been named in the England A training squad for a match against an Argentina XV. England A is a development team, one step below the senior England side, which gives emerging players a chance to test themselves at a higher level. An Argentina XV is a side made up of Argentinian players, and the fixture gives young squad members experience of a different style of opposition.

Being named in a training squad does not guarantee a place in the match-day team, and Harlequins have not commented on how the new contract fits with any international plans. Still, the timing is worth noticing. Clubs often lock in players they see as part of the next phase of their squad, and a homegrown hooker with nearly 90 games behind him fits that description.

Harlequins announced the news through their own channels, and the club's official website has run similar contract stories for Riley before. For supporters, the headline is simple: their academy product is staying put, and the length of his commitment is the detail still to come.
