Martin McDonagh to Receive Palm Springs Directing Honour

Martin McDonagh will receive the Outstanding Achievement in Directing Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, The Hollywood Reporter reported on 5 November 2026. The prize recognises a director's work, and it will be presented at the Palm Springs International Film Awards on 7 January 2027.
The festival itself runs from 7 to 18 January 2027, so the award falls at the very start of its programme. It opens the new year's festival season in the desert city, which holds its event in January each year.
McDonagh is the writer and director of Wild Horse Nine. He has won six BAFTAs, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts' awards, and three Golden Globes, according to the same report.
The film stars John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell as CIA agents. Their journey takes them to Easter Island shortly before the 1973 coup in Chile. Mariana di Girolamo and Ailin Salas play rebellious students caught up in the story.
Past winners of the Palm Springs directing award give a sense of the company McDonagh joins. The list includes Jane Campion, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Greta Gerwig, Steve McQueen, Sarah Polley, David O. Russell, Quentin Tarantino and Chloé Zhao.
For a festival, a directing honour like this is a way of marking a filmmaker's body of work rather than a single release. It also puts a name in front of the audiences and buyers who gather in January, many of them weighing which films and filmmakers to follow into the months ahead.
The award will be handed out on the opening night of the awards on 7 January 2027, the same day the festival begins.
