Saffie Osborne makes her Hong Kong riding debut at Sha Tin racecourse on Sunday, 8 November, and she has been booked for 10 rides on an 11-race card. The 24-year-old jockey is heading abroad after a season that has taken her a long way from Wolverhampton.

Back on 6 January, she rode a 150-1 chance in a £7,000 race at Wolverhampton and finished last of seven runners. Those odds mean the bookmakers saw the horse as a very long shot. Ten months on, The Guardian reports that she has recorded 85 wins from 600 rides since the start of the year. Her level-stakes profit, which measures what the result would be if the same amount had been bet on every ride, stands at £31.81.

The biggest day so far came in September. Riding Highwayman, she won the St Leger, the 250th running of the race and one of the most important races for three-year-olds in Britain. Bloodhorse recorded the win. It was her first win at Group One level, the highest grade of Flat race, and the first time a female jockey had won a British Classic.

Two weeks or so after that win, the Hong Kong Jockey Club offered her a riding contract for the six weeks before Christmas. Racing Post says the stint runs until 23 December and takes in the Longines International Jockeys' Championship, where riders from several countries compete.

Sunday's meeting is the Sa Sa Ladies' Purse Day, and the Hong Kong Jockey Club has highlighted her as the St Leger-winning rider on a busy first day. She is booked to ride Aeroinvincible, trained by Ng, carrying 115lb in the Class 2 Santa Monica race. Class 2 is the second tier of race grading at Sha Tin.

The feature is the £400,000 Group Three Sa Sa Ladies' Purse Handicap. A handicap is a race where the handicapper gives better horses more weight to carry, so the field is levelled out. Osborne is set to ride Silvery Breeze at bottom weight of 8st 3lb, the lightest weight in the race. Hollie Doyle and Rossa Ryan will also ride in Hong Kong over the coming weeks, so she will have familiar faces around her in the weighing room.

The season has moved fast. A last-placed finish in January, a Classic in September and a Hong Kong debut in November make a sharp arc for one rider. What comes next will be decided by the next ten rides on Sunday and the weeks of racing that follow.
