The cast and filmmakers behind La Bola Negra will receive the International Star Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Jan. 7, Variety reported.

Co-directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi plan to attend the festival's 38th annual gala. They will be joined by stars Penélope Cruz, Guitarricadelafuente and Miguel Bernardeau to accept the award.

The film draws on the unfinished final work of Federico García Lorca, the Spanish poet and playwright, and on a play by Alberto Conejero. Cruz plays Nené, a cabaret singer, according to an interview published by Netflix's Tudum site on Oct. 29.

The film has already collected a string of prizes. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where, according to Variety, it received a standing ovation that lasted 16 minutes and won the Best Director Award. It later took the audience award at the 2026 BFI London Film Festival and the audience prize at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Next month brings another honour. The film will receive the Gotham Vanguard Tribute at the Gotham Film Awards on Nov. 30. Separately, Guitarricadelafuente received the Discovery Award at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival.

Spain has also chosen the film as its official entry for best international feature at the 2027 Academy Awards. Each country picks one film a year to put forward for that Oscar category, which was once called best foreign language film.

Festival awards rarely arrive one at a time. For this film, the calendar now runs from Cannes to Toronto and London, then to New York in November and Palm Springs in January. Each stop gives the cast and crew another reason to return to a stage.
