Greylan James has been named Billboard's Country Up-and-Comer artist of the month for November, the magazine announced on 6 November 2026. The East Tennessee singer-songwriter has a full few weeks ahead, with a debut album, a headlining tour and a stadium support slot all on the calendar.

The song that brought him wider attention is "Water at a Wedding." It tells the story of a man at his ex's wedding who notices she is drinking water instead of wine. He wrote it with Matt Dragstrem and Chase McGill.

The track reached the top 20 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart, the weekly ranking of the songs most played on country radio. Billboard's main singles ranking, the Hot 100, combines radio play, streaming and sales. The song debuted at No. 100 on that chart, and it is listed on the Hot 100 for the week of 7 November. Billboard Charts marked the entry as Greylan James's first career appearance on the Hot 100.

Fans have kept the song moving. After listeners began writing their own takes on the story, the singer released a version called "Water At A Wedding (her side)," featuring Gabriella Rose, as MusicRow reported on 7 October. In a Facebook post, he said the song had passed 30 million streams.

His songwriting reaches well beyond his own records. He co-wrote Jordan Davis's "Next Thing You Know," which won Song of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards, the industry's annual honours for the genre. He also co-wrote Kenny Chesney's "Born" and "Come Here, Go Away," Morgan Wallen's "Nothing Left," and BRELAND's "For What It's Worth."

His path to Nashville started in a small way. At 11, he was playing in a bluegrass band when he met Chesney briefly. Years later, Chesney's advice to him was to stay in school and learn to write songs.

The next dates are on the calendar now:

  • 6 November: his headlining Wedding Season: The Tour begins.
  • 11 November: his website lists a show at Ovens Auditorium.
  • 13 November: his self-titled debut album is released.
  • Next year: he is set to open on Kenny Chesney's Original Vibe Room Stadium Tour.

Earlier in the year, he also made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry, the long-running Nashville stage and radio show, in October.

For a songwriter who spent years writing for other singers, the album is the first time his own name sits on the cover of a full project. A debut album is a record's first full collection of songs from one artist, and for many new acts it is the point where listeners can hear the whole range of their work. The tour and the album arrive together, which means the coming weeks will give a clearer picture of how far the song has travelled.
