Carlisle United beat Salford City 1-0 on Saturday 7 November, and the National League side are through to the second round of the FA Cup.

The first-round tie was played at Brunton Park, Carlisle's home ground, with a 3pm kick-off. BBC Sport reported the result. It was the first time the two clubs had met in the competition.

For anyone new to the cup, the FA Cup is England's knockout competition. Clubs from across the football pyramid enter, and each tie is a single match. Win and you move on. Lose and you are out. That simple rule is why lower-league sides can end up playing the biggest names in the game.

Carlisle play in the National League, the fifth tier of English football. Salford City compete in League Two, which is one level higher, at the fourth tier. Salford were top of League Two when they arrived in Cumbria, so the result will catch the eye of anyone who follows the lower divisions.

The winning goal is the detail that matters most for the scoreboard, but the tie itself is the story. Cup football tends to bring out a particular kind of afternoon. A crowd at Brunton Park, a team a division below, and a result nobody had written in advance.

Carlisle now wait to find out who they will face in the second round. Salford, for their part, leave the competition with their league position intact but their cup run over for this season.

For a club outside the professional leagues, a home win over a League Two leader is the sort of day supporters hold on to. It is also a reminder of why the cup still matters, one knockout match at a time.
