York City beat Northampton Town 4-0 in the FA Cup first round, and captain Ollie Pearce scored inside the first ten seconds. BBC Sport reported the early goal, which came on Saturday 7 November 2026 at the LNER Community Stadium in York.

The FA Cup is England's oldest knockout competition. Clubs from across the professional and non-league pyramid enter, so a small team can meet a bigger one and go through on the day. One match, one winner, and no replays in the first rounds. The first round is where the bottom tiers of English football first meet the wider draw.

Northampton Town, who arrived in York as the visiting side, had to chase the game from the first whistle. The kick-off was at 3:00pm, and the home crowd had barely settled before the ball was in the net. Pearce, who leads the side on the pitch, got in front of the Northampton defence to set the tone.

Pearce was active throughout. Sky Sports noted a right-footed shot from the left side of the box in the 68th minute, which Northampton goalkeeper James Dadge saved. A second attempt from Pearce was also saved in the 72nd minute.

The two clubs had already met this season. On 10 October, York and Northampton drew 1-1 at the same ground, and Pearce scored a late equaliser that day, Sky Sports reported. That game ended level after York had come back from a goal down. This time there was no need for a comeback.

For York, the win sends them on to the next round of a competition that can turn a season. For Northampton, it is a long afternoon's journey home with a loss to think about. Cup football rarely leaves room for a second chance, and that is part of its pull.

The next step is the second round draw, which will decide the opponents for whoever wins through.
