Rodrigo Muniz scored Fulham's equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United on Saturday, and he dedicated the goal to his baby.

It was his first league goal since Fulham's opening top-flight match of last season. For a striker, the forward whose job is to get on the end of chances, that is a long stretch without a goal to celebrate.

Muniz is 25 and Brazilian. He joined Fulham from Flamengo in 2021 and has 19 goals and three assists in 86 Premier League appearances for the club. An assist is the pass that sets up a goal for a team-mate.

His season has been stop-start. He had surgery in November on a hamstring injury, the muscle at the back of the thigh, and was sidelined until early February. Since returning, he has been used mainly as a substitute. All eight of his Premier League appearances this season under manager Alvaro Arbeloa have come off the bench. He has scored in the Carabao Cup, the League Cup, in wins over AFC Wimbledon and West Ham.

Off the pitch, the news has been more personal. Muniz's wife was pregnant last season, but the couple lost the baby in a miscarriage. She is pregnant again. That context is why the dedication landed the way it did, and it is why Muniz's first league goal in so long felt like more than a line in the table.

Newcastle, coached by Matthias Jaissle, had the chance to keep their hold on the game. Fulham found a way to take a point, and the goal came when the team needed it. Fulham's match report covers the rest of the afternoon.

What happens next for Muniz is a question for the coaching staff. For now, he has a goal, a dedication, and a reminder of why the game matters beyond the scoreboard.
