Alessia Russo scores twice as Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield

Alessia Russo scored twice as Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield in the Women's Super League, the top women's league in England, on Sunday.
Beata Olsson gave Liverpool their goal, but it was not enough for the home side. The Guardian reported that Arsenal's head coach, Renée Slegers, watched her team come away with all three points.
Russo has been in fine form. Before this match she had scored seven goals in her previous four appearances, and 10 goals in her last seven games for club and country combined. Russo was also already one of the most dangerous players away from home this season. Arsenal's preview of the match noted she had six away goals and five assists in the 2025/26 season, more than any other player. An assist is the pass that leads to a goal.
Liverpool had reason to believe they had levelled. Jenna Clark thought she had scored, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Offside means an attacker was ahead of the last defender when the ball was played to them, and it is one of the most closely watched decisions in the game.
The result also had a personal side for Liverpool. Grace Fisk signed a new contract with the club on the Saturday before the match, the day before the game. Fisk's future was settled, and the match then gave Liverpool plenty to build on, even in defeat.
For Arsenal, the win is another example of how much they lean on Russo in front of goal. She has a habit of finding the net when the game is tight, and at Anfield she did it twice. Russo has been a familiar figure at the top of the Women's Super League for years, and she has scored winners and late rescue goals in big matches before.
Liverpool will look back on a match where their chances were enough to make it close, but not enough to turn it their way. Arsenal leave with a result that keeps them in the thick of the title race. Next up, both sides will return to their league schedules, where every point will count.
